Centers and Institutes

As a national research university, Northeastern is home to 35 interdisciplinary research centers and institutes, including an NSF-funded engineering research center and an NSF-funded nanotechnology center. Fifteen are headed by professors holding endowed chairs or distinguished professorships. They focus on a variety of subject areas, including:

Northeastern also has a number of education centers that conduct research but whose primary focus is advocacy, outreach and education. The University's research support facilities provide the technology that faculty and students need to pursue their scientific and scholarly endeavors.

Internal Proposals for New Centers or Institutes
Faculty are eligible to propose the establishment of new centers or institutes. The guidelines for preparation of the proposals are provided in the following document:

Proposers should consult with their Department Chair and College Dean. The Dean will submit the proposal with her/his endorsement to the Vice Provost for Research. The Vice Provost and the Provost then submit the proposal to the Deans Council for discussion. Establishment of the Center/Institute requires approval by the Deans Council.
